Called infamous ,even by Matt himself Dark World is not up there with the recent movies that Dark Night Films has put out...But that's the point.(I should add that my favorite scene was the disrobing of the female body guard :) ) You have to learn as you go along ,and you might as well start with Dark World. Not to say that Dark world is not fun to watch...It is ,but I really had a hard time buying into the fact that it was in the future ,when were in present surroundings. All and all it was a fun take off on Mortal Combat ,and Star Wars ,but it seems to leave open the possibility of a sequel. DVD extras: The outtakes where very funny ,but all I could think of when watching the wall flips was...Ouch. The trailer for the film made the film look better then it was. Matt's intro was very good ,and set the tone. I think the new audio track is better. I'lI leave the easter eggs on the disk a surprise.
Here's my take on this film. It is saved by the excellent as always Matt Spease in the role of the hypnotic villain Flannigan Drake. Matt has proved his versitility over and over again his films. In Evil On Queen Street he played a totally badass hero in Nick Wilson, in Chameleon Killer he was the geeky police profiler Mitch Phillips, in Ascension he took the Nick Wilson character and made him more vulnerable, and in Dark World he does a total role reversal with Drake. Drake is the most interesting and utterly cool character in the whole film. I wish I could say the same for some of the other characters, Isaak Partlow is not a very convincing hero at all. Violet Flame is alright as Princess Arianne, Robin Lawrence and Amanda Jones do a pretty good job as the two mind controlled assassins. Jones also plays the buble gum chewing blond heroine of the film, but she doesn't really come off as being tough enough in this role. Matt also plays (although uncredited) George Carlin... oops, I mean Captain Casey. He does a really good job doing a Carlin impersonation, so much so that most of the time you actually feel your watching George Carlin in the film. Overall Matt's performance(s) really save this film. *** out of *****
With this cut we have a version that plays better. The space scenes are now gone ,which doesn't hurt this film one bit. And it's always good sometimes to leave some things to the imagination....Especially when you don't have the budget to pull them off effectively. And it also gives you the idea that in the context of the movie ,all they cared about in terms of progress was advancing weapons ,not buildings. :) Sure the film is cheesy...But it's a fun cheesy. I also noticed that Steve Austin's dialog is now totally dubbed. As I've said in previous reviews I'm not a fan of dubbing ,but it didn't take me out of the movie. Special Features: Another great commentary from Matt with this one As usual he gives us some great info on the making of the film (Never caught the thing with Carlin) The Die Stooges die short was a hoot ,and nothing more needs to be said. :) The Dark Night Films cut of the film is still a fun film ,but it doesn't hold up to this one ,and in my opinion is the best cut of the film you can get. Bloopers are always a good edition to any DVD.
